Waves Come Up Short Versus Gulls

WAKEFIELD, RI – In a matchup full of big plays, the Ocean State Waves come up short to the Newport Gulls 13-5 and fall to 2-3 on the summer to their Pell Bridge rivals.

The visitors struck first on a solo home run from Alec Markarewicz in the top of the third, but Ocean State responded with a pair of their own in their half of the inning. Jake Studley went yard past left field to lead off before Khyree Miller extended his team lead with his seventh homer of the season to give the Waves a 2-1 lead.

A fireworks-filled fourth inning saw both teams combine to add nine runs onto the scoreboard. After Newport begun the frame with a pair of runs, Jacob Burley sent a moonshot over the left field fence with the bases loaded to jump out in front 7-2.

Ocean State added three runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 7-5, including two sacrifice fly RBIs from Justin Long and Drew Holderbach. But it was all Gulls from that point forward, as another five-run explosion in the seventh before a final run in the eighth sealed the deal to send the Waves back to .500.
